How Can We Create Mental Health Ads that are Inclusive and Effective, Particularly for Racialized Immigrants?

This project explored how to design mental health ads that avoid stigmatizing people, particularly immigrants. We know that immigrants’ mental health has been a concern for public health authorities, so it’s crucial to create ads that are inclusive and effective.

In our first study, we conducted focus groups with 10 Black immigrants about their thoughts on mental health ads that featured Black models. In our second study, we conducted focus groups with 24 immigrant women of colour about how to create better ads that destigmatize mental health issues.

We found that racialized immigrants prefer ads that showcase diverse models from various races, cultures, ages and religions. They dislike ads that focus on a single racial group, as this can lead to negative stereotypes and unintended consequences.

To create effective ads, we must center the voices of racialized immigrants. By understanding immigrants’ experiences, we can develop culturally sensitive ads that reduce stigma and promote mental health for all.
