Understanding the Pre-migration Context and Supporting Newcomer Families with Trauma

This workshop will focus on giving a better understanding of the pre-migration experiences of immigrant and refugee families and youth, and will provide simple strategies to help them cope with trauma. Areas of discussion will include the pre-migration experience, trauma in the context of newcomers, resilience and resources for immigrants.

Participants will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the pre-migration experiences of immigrant and refugee youth and children
  • Learn simple strategies for working with refugee families and youth

About the Facilitator:
Karin Linschoten has been a counsellor/therapist at the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers since 2002, providing counselling services for adults, youth and children from immigrant and refugee backgrounds. She also works as a mentor/counsellor at the Multicultural Health Broker’s Cooperative, providing case consultation and counselling services for families from refugee and immigrant backgrounds and is the Representative for Canada on the International Council for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims.
