Healthy Welcoming Communities Created by Immigrant Youth
Project Description:
This project will identify what immigrant youth in a second-tier Ontario city envision as a healthy community, one in which they would want to live, and where they can participate fully in civic life. The project aims to develop relationships with local immigrant youth and to include them as partners in the research process in order to promote civic engagement and to collect pilot data on the characteristics and experiences of a healthy welcoming community.
It is anticipated that the data will highlight the qualities of healthy, welcoming communities that are attractive, accepting and encouraging of full youth participation in community life. The data are also expected to identify promising approaches and initiatives involving community work and counselling for youth and their families who face multiple challenges associated with relocation and adjustment to a new country and community.
