Western Settlement Outcomes Survey

This report provides an overview of recent settlement outcomes of immigrants living in the four provinces of CIC’s new Western region. The report also offers comparisons of similarities and differences across the region, and suggests factors that may account for this variation.  It is hoped that the results of study will inform policies, programs, services, and resource allocations in Western Canada with a view to improving settlement outcomes.

The report is based on a telephone survey conducted in April-May 2013 of a representative sample of 2936 immigrants living in the four western provinces of Canada.  The survey probed the settlement and integration experiences and outcomes of newcomers, as well as predictors of these outcomes.  Specific sections investigated: experiences with settlement services in the province of residence, information needs, economic integration and outcomes, social integration and outcomes, and demographic information. The survey instrument used in the study was a pared down version of the previously tested and validated Alberta Settlement Outcomes Survey, developed for Alberta in 2012 by a Pathways to Prosperity research team.
