Workshop on French-Speaking Immigration to Francophone Minority Communities

Westin Hotel, Ottawa

On Wednesday, November 30, Pathways to Prosperity, in collaboration with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is organizing a research meeting to bring together academic researchers interested in the issue of French-speaking immigration to Francophone Minority Communities.

The objective of this meeting is to allow participating researchers to discuss the research carried out in this field, emerging issues, new issues and research priorities for the years to come. The one-day meeting will include a variety of presentations and facilitated discussions. Five sessions are planned on the following themes: taking stock of recent research on French-speaking immigration to Francophone minority communities; issues and challenges related to definitions; the gaps between the needs and aspirations of French-speaking immigrants and Francophone minority communities; issues related to prejudice and discrimination; and ways to optimize future research in the field and next steps.

This meeting will bring together 14 academic researchers, 4 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, as well as 12 observers. Universities across the country will be represented, from the Atlantic region and Ontario, to the Prairies and British Columbia. This meeting will be interdisciplinary with experts in fields as varied as education, political studies, geography, occupational sciences and sociology, among others. It will also include observers from various sectors, including IRCC, Heritage Canada, and Statistics Canada, as well as Francophone associations such as the Association des colleges et universities de la francophone canadienne (ACUFC) and the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne du Canada (FCFA).

The meeting will be held in Ottawa and will precede the annual Pathways to Prosperity conference on December 1 and 2. We look forward to a lively exchange of ideas and interesting discussions.
